If an unmarried adult child dies, his or her friends, employer, and coworkers must be notified of the death. You can offer to help call people to let them know.

If the cause of death involved stigma (as in AIDS, drugs, alcohol, or suicide), parents often feel guilty that they didn’t know or didn’t do enough to prevent the death. If you wish, you can say, “I know of (or can get information on) a support group if you’re interested.” Then back off. Some people will want to take advantage of a group; others will not. The Compassionate Friends, an international support group for families who have experienced the death of a child, is an excellent resource.
